This class will focus on rigging, teamwork, the basics of boat handling, and introduce sailors to racing in CFJs.

La Playa Series Sabot Races are afternoon race events held in the La Playa anchorage between SDYC and SWYC. The races are open to all San Diego Area Junior Sailors in A-C3 fleets. These events are great first regattas for new racers and are still great practice for experienced sabot racers in higher fleets.
Overview:
This class aims to develop the next generation of Sabot Racers. Sailors will learn the fundamentals of sailboat racing, including starting sequences, mark rounding, boat handling, and introducing the Racing Rules of Sailing.
Eligibility:
Sailors can be moved up into the racing classes upon coach recommendation.
Sabot Racing practices are open to sailors from C3 to A fleet. The goal of this course is to develop confident and successful sailors in the sport. Curriculum will include technical boat setup, boat handling, starting strategies, upwind/downwind tactics, and some rules study. Sailors will be divided into groups based on their fleet status where these topics will be tailored to each skill level. Privately owned boats are not required but are strongly encouraged.
A-C1: This group will expand on the Winter Program curriculum, focusing more on tactics, strategy, and begin team racing.
C3/C2: This group will continue working on boat handling skills and the fundamentals of fleet racing.
The SDYC Sabot Race Team will be training for the following travel regattas:
No Sabot practices will be held at SDYC during these travel events.
**Coaching at the Earl Elms will be limited in the A-C1 fleets with no instruction on the water. They will be working on Coach Jon’s “Self-Coaching Checklist” to prepare them for competitions without coaching support. This is a target regatta for our new C3 fleet, so there will be additional coaching provided in this group.
The SDYC Doublehanded Race Team will be working primarily in C420’s and 29er’s. The goal of this class is to prepare doublehanded teams for SCYYRA Series events and select US Sailing events. Charter fees and coaching for regattas are included in the class entry fee.
Loaner HPYS 29ers with practice sails will be available on a limited basis for an additional $100/session.
Sailors can sign up solo but one coaching goal will be to form teams to train for and sail in the following regattas:
Sailors should augment their weekly training sessions with HPYS Clinics at SDYC.
Thursday, April 4th & Friday, April 5th
Schedule:
Sailors will prepare for the SCYYRA Perry Series #4 Regatta at SDYC on April 6th and 7th with Head Coach Jon Rogers and Coach Buzz Glenn. We are capitalizing on the Spring Break schedule to organize a longer practice that will allow us to head out to the ocean and train on the Coronado Roads, the weekend race venue. Sailors will ensure that their boats are properly set up for the weekend, practice sailing in ocean swell, and return to debrief before other afternoon programs begin.
This program is specifically for sailors who will be competing in the upcoming Perry Regatta. Sailors will be paired with the partner that they plan to compete with.
Entry Fees (per team):
Sailors who are NOT registered for any Spring Program classes will be charged $40 Member/$60 Non-Member per sailor, per day for coaching and boat charter fees.
Sailors registered in other Spring Program classes and not the Perry Training will only be charged $20 per day for the boat charter. No additional coaching fees will be assessed.
