Team SDYC – US Sailing Team Race National Championship for the Hinman Trophy
Friday, November 7, 2025
A late September weekend in Larchmont, NY, saw Team SDYC (Jack Egan, Aidan Hoogland, Jack Reiter, and our respective crews) compete in the US Team Race championship for the Hinman Trophy. Team SDYC travelled to compete in the national-level regatta with strong ambition and high spirits. Following our 3rd place finish in the same event two years prior, we were excited and ambitious for this year’s event, feeling confident as ever ahead of three days against some of the stiffest competitors the event has seen.
The regatta featured 164 races over three days in fluctuating conditions – a mix of moderate wind, shifts, and occasional lulls. The format featured a round robin against the other 15 teams, a top 6 Gold round robin, then knockouts versus the total top 8. After a solid start to the first stage, we found ourselves sitting in 3rd - making it into the Gold round robin, where we faced some tough competition and sat down in 4th, headed to the knockouts. The knockout stages were challenging, but our teamwork and comfort level in winner-take-all races helped us prevail in the finals against a young but incredibly talented team that had successfully won the previous two years and was searching for a 3-peat. Once in the finals, we fought their skill and talent but fell short in the end, with a couple of unforced errors costing us in key moments, leaving us with Silver Medals in our hands. While it was not a victory, we walked away with our heads high, as this was a massive accomplishment. Aidan, Jack, and I are beyond excited for our upcoming team race events and feel as if we’re creating a strong foundation that can help SDYC continue to maintain its legacy and reputation in the Team Racing community.
Our second-place finish could not have been achieved without the generous support of the SDYC Competition Fund. We are deeply grateful for this investment in our team and in the future of competitive sailing at SDYC. We look forward to building on this momentum, refining our prep, and aiming for the top spot next season. Thank you again for your continued support.
