Team SDYC Repeats as Winners of the Rolex NYYC Invitational Cup
Tuesday, October 7, 2025
Team SDYC faced off in a field of 20 teams from countries and yacht clubs all over the world in what is regarded as the world championship of amateur big boat sailing. The regatta took place at NYYC in Newport, RI from September 9-13. SDYC's team of 9 sailors included Jake La Dow, Adam Roberts, Rick Merriman, Nick Martin, Max Hutcheson, Andy Reiter, Lucy Wallace, Kara Voss, and David Dempsey.
Over 5 days of racing in the worlds most competitive amateur fleet, SDYC held on to the lead from day 1. Breeze ranged from 4-20kts throughout the event. While the team had many ups and downs throughout the races, team SDYC put consistent scores on the board to remain in 1st place after each day of sailing.
Race 10 of the 12 race series was a tough one for SDYC with a 16th place finish. This rapidly diminished the teams once 18 point lead. SDYC went into the final race with a mere 6 point lead.
The final race was full of dramatic moments and the fans watching sure felt the stress as did the sailors on the boat. SDYC had a decent start and made their way to the right side of the course which was favored. 3/4 of the way up the first windward beat, team SDYC was in 5th place. Things became difficult when the top 4 boats stacked on starboard layline presented no openings for SDYC to make it to the layline clean. SDYC tacked short of layline and were pinned to the left of the mark while the rest of the fleet rapidly caught up. The team had to bail out of that position and duck almost the entire fleet to get to starboard layline ultimately rounding in 16th place while the competition sailed away in front. The rest of the race was about catching boats which the team ultimately did and finished in 8th place. That was enough to secure the regatta win.
The regatta win was a true SDYC effort. SDYC's BOD, FOundation, Members, and the Comp Fund provided tremendous support to get SDYC to the start line. The team was extremely proud to represent SDYC and make all of the fans and supporters proud. SDYC is a special place and the effort and support of the comp fund is critical to SDYC's success on the water. Thank you for your continued generous support!
