From a Race Committee perspective, it is nice to finally have the June page of the calendar turned. In calendar planning terms - as late as this February, several events were still settling into their final slots. While June is usually a restful month after the hustle of May with Yachting Cup and Lipton Cup, it snuck up on us this year. Specifically, the weekend of June 13-14 gradually became a focal point where three seemingly modest events landed. And as the date grew near, so did the requirements and anticipation for these three events.
First there was the One Design Weekend for June which grew to four fleets sailing, and expanded from a one day event to a two day event. Still, it was great to see other fleets (Flying Tigers and J/120s) join the Etchells and J/105s to utilize this monthly tradition.
Second was the Snipe District Championship which moved from a different date. Initially we anticipated a 20+ fleet and a big Pre-Worlds workout. But for various reasons, it didn’t materialize. Never the less, the 11 boat fleet was no less competitive. Winner Brian Bissel from Newport was a clear winner with only 7 points over 6 races, but just 3 points separated the next four places.
To round out the June 13/14 trifecta was the Senior Sabot Nationals in a wonderful partnership with Mission Bay Yacht Club as the venue host. SDYC provided some key Race Committee personnel lead by PRO Jim Person, while the SSSS fleet (lead by team O’Connell/Kenny) provided a boat load of volunteers to run registration and other shore-side components. Mission Bay for their part provided access to one of the best Sabot racing venues anywhere, and some key volunteers to operate their markset boats and the classic RC signal boat "Barca". While there was some concern about our Race Committee volunteers and assets being able to cover all these obligations, in fact everything came off without a hitch. But hold your applause!
There is still a considerable amount of work to be done. At the end of this month, we begin a three week date with the international competitors of the renowned Snipe Class for the Snipe World Championships and Junior Snipe World Championships. Our RC volunteers have about 12 days of 'on the water' work to do for the Snipes and other regular events scheduled for the month. Rest assured, the work will get done. And if you know of, or overhear someone talking about helping out with Race Committee, promise to do two things – Thank them, and ask them how you can help out. Hopefully they will refer you to either the club's Race Info website or directly to our office. Thank you in advance for your time and efforts!!
Applause!
