Summer Regattas at SDYC
The Sailing Office has turned the corner so to speak on the first leg of sailing events for the year. Most of the big, multi-venue events have past and many sailors are gearing up for some vacation time this summer.
Several of the regattas on the calendar for July and August are relaxed affairs that might make the perfect excuse to execute some vacation time aboard your sailboat.
For folks with a little more ‘blue water’ in their veins, there is the dash from Newport Beach (Bahia Corinthian YC) down to San Diego (NOR - Entry). This traditional short sprint down the coast is for the racers looking to stretch it out a little. Most racers finish the approximately 65 mile course by early Sunday morning, and after a little nap, there is a nice awards presentation on the front deck. Entry is with Bahia Corinthian YC but you can access this event here.
For those that really want to go to sea, they should mark their calendars for August 15 – 17 for the Bishop Rock race. This race has it all – up wind, downwind (mostly), both light and heavy air sailing, day – night, etc. It is the best kept little secret in the offshore racing world. It starts on a Friday in Catalina at Two Harbors (Ship Rock to be exact) and goes around Santa Barbara Island, down to Cortez Bank (Bishop Rock buoy) and then east to the finish at Point Loma. At 186 miles, it is not a quickie – but the bigger boats get this course done in 28 to 36 hours. Of that, it is about 30% upwind sailing (to Santa Barbara) and 60% downwind. The last 10% can’t be accounted for and could be anything…but then it wouldn’t be an adventure if you knew exactly what you were in for…Dare to go the distance…August 15 – 18.
