Staff Commodore's Room

This is a sanctioned US Sailing Judges Seminar required for initial certification and re-certification as a US Sailing Judge or Senior Judge. For those that are not currently certified Judges, some protest committee experience is recommended but not required.

The seminar will begin at 0800 each day and last until approximately 1700.  It will cover topics involved in successful judging: rules and requirements for handling protests and requests for redress, techniques involved in running good hearings, writing up protest committee decisions, handling open hearings and arbitration.

The instructors for this seminar will be Senior Judges Pat Stadel and Bill Stump.  Bill is also the Area J Regional Administrative Judge.

Cost of the seminar is $10 for US Sailing members and $55 for non-members. This includes snacks & beverages in the morning & afternoon, handout materials, and exam processing.  Participants will be able to purchase their lunch at the SDYC dining room.

US Sailing membership is not required to attend this seminar, but Non-members who register for this seminar, will receive a Special Introductory Membership (a US Sailing one year adult membership).

You should bring the current editions of The Racing Rules of Sailing (and US prescriptions), US Sailing Judges Manual, and the US Sailing Appeals and ISAF Case Book.  Either hard or soft (w/the laptop/tablet in airplane mode) copies of the manuals may be used during the test. These manuals may be purchased online from the US Sailing Store (http://store.ussailing.org)

Study Questions are available on the US Sailing website. Please download them from Study Questions.

We strongly recommend that you study and answer each question, and write down the relevant rule cites prior to attending the seminar. This is especially important because new rules go into effect on 1 January 2013 and participants will be expected to know the 2013-2016 version of each rule.

Advanced registration is required. The deadline for registration is January 21, 2013. Registration should be completed online at:
