If you are interested in coaching, one of the most important steps is earning your Level I Instructor certification from US Sailing. Virtually every facility requires all training staff to be certified, and there are both educational and legal advantages for you as the coach, too. I guarantee that you will come out of the training course with new sailing knowledge.

San Diego Yacht Club will be hosting a Level I Instructor Course, December 17-20, 8am-6pm each day. I know this 40 hour, 4 day course is always hard to fit in, but it’s a great idea to get ahead of your requirements for next summer’s job, and classes in the spring tend to fill quickly. Our December class usually has enough sign-ups to make it a “double” with up to 24 sailors, and also Instructor Trainer Ray Treppa, in addition to myself. Double classes are way more interesting, and fun.

The Level I course will evaluate your proficiency operating both small sailboats and powerboats, but that’s just the starting point. We’ll also review and be tested on many aspects of boating that may be new to you, if you are predominantly a dinghy racer. We’ll especially practice delivering sailing topics through all three instructional phases recommended by US Sailing: Chalk Talk, Land Drill, and Water Drills. For many coach candidates, this course’s major focus on public speaking is the most valuable part.

All registration for these classes is online, and via US Sailing
