San Diego Yacht Club will host the 2016 Finn Pacific Coast Championship (PCC) for the third consecutive year on September 17 & 18, 2016. Chaired by SDYC’s Rear Commodore, Mike Dorgan, this year’s championship will be a warm up event for the Finn Masters North American Championship taking place at Mission Bay Yacht Club the following weekend.

Known as the men’s heavyweight single person dingy, the Finn has been an Olympic Class boat since 1952. This was an especially exciting Olympic year for the San Diego Finn fleet because local San Diego sailor, Caleb Paine, won the bronze medal in the Finn Class, which was the only medal for the United States in all sailing events. Paine competed in last year’s Finn Nationals hosted by SDYC, winning all the races, as part of his training for Rio.

Several former Olympians in the Finn Class have won this Pacific Coast Championship in the past, including Brian Ledbetter and Zach Railey. Ledbetter finished 12th in the Finn Class in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and won a silver medal in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. A few years later, Railey competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics winning a silver medal, and finished 12th in the 2012 London Olympics.

Although no Olympians are registered for this year’s Finn PCCs, one of the prominent entries for this year’s race is Darrell Peck from the Vancouver Lake Sailing Club. Peck is a professional Finn coach and sailor who has won this regatta five times.

The 13 boats registered at this time will race the PCCs in Coronado Roads on both Saturday and Sunday. SDYC will host a dinner party for competitors on Saturday evening in the Staff Commodores Room and an awards ceremony on Sunday after the racing concludes.
