ABOUT THE BOAT:
VELOS has a jumbled international heritage that could make for a challenging high school geography pop quiz. The boat was built in Belgium in 1986 by Composite Technologies Inc., and designed by a French émigré now American residing in Newport, Rhode Island. The current owners are Danes, who had emigrated through Chile to Southern California. Raced on the Atlantic by the first owner, cruised in Maine by the second, and relocated to the West Coast via the Panama Canal by the third. The sails are American design, built in China, finished in San Diego. The engine is Japanese, the generator is Italian but assembled in America. |
ABOUT THE CREW:
Oddly there is crew aboard from the Bay Area, and they are sailing south. Maybe a compass needs to be swung. |
WHAT'S IN A NAME:
The Spanish translation for velos is the english noun, sails
|
RANDOM:
VELOS has raced with as many as 32 people aboard. In the Long Beach Inshore Championships the USC sailing team was onboard, at least one went overboard after leaving the bar the first night. Convinced there was a head on deck forward of the mast, he walked through the bow pulpit into the bay.
