ABOUT THE BOAT:
Designed By Reichel-Pugh and Built by Westerly Marine with components from all over the world, "SRM III" is a composite built, canting keel racer. She's spent her first season (2006) racing on the East Coast returning to California in 2007. She'll be racing on the Great Lakes in the Summer '08.
|
ABOUT THE CREW:
The crew of 12 is largely San Diego based including "SRM III" regulars Jim Madden, Gary Weisman, Jon Gardner, Chuck Sinks, Chris Busch, and Peter Burton. In addition, other regulars and a few new comers are Jeff Gordon, Mike Nash, Piet van Os, Joe Fanelli, Gary Mitchell, and Gary Gordon.
|
WHAT'S IN A NAME:
"Stark Raving Mad III" is the the 3rd of the "Stark Raving Mad" boats. The name for the first, a 2000 J/160, was thought up by Jim's wife, Heather, as a result of Jim badly blowing the budget for "SRM I" and as a play on the last name. "SRM I" won the '02 PV Race, and "SRM II", a J/145, took 1st in Class and 1st Overall for the SDYC 2005 "Hot Rum Series". There is also an "SRM" addition, "SRM IV", a J/125 which recently won its class at Key West Race Week (2008).
|
RANDOM:
After 3 slow days with little to no wind in the 2007 Cabo Race, the last hour of the race provided the best entertainment and excitement when the breeze picked up to 25-30 knots and the boat hit speeds of 28 knots. Kyle Clark captured 30 seconds of it on video with the boat plowing through waves. You can see the video on the SRM web site at: www.stark-raving-mad.com Click on the “Movie” icon. We're all hoping for fair winds for PV '08.
