Doug Giddings
1917-2009
Champion SDYC PC Skipper Doug Giddings "Crossed the Bar" on June 2, 2009. Doug was well known at the SDYC and you can see his name on many of the trophies in the PC Trophy case. During WWII, Doug was a Navy officer who was assigned to a sailing ship looking for enemy submarines off the Pacific coast. He was also assigned to "mine sweepers" as an officer in command. One of his favorite stories was how he was responsible for George Kettenburg JR's running PC #1 "SCAMP" up on the beach in 1939 (during a race when Doug had the right of way), restulting in ocean taking the vessel on to the shore. Doug's PC sucesses can be found in the book "Building Kettenburgs".
Doug was a gentleman who always had time to give PC advice or share stories. He and I spent many an hour on the phone or in the clubhouse just chatting about his love for PCs. He will be missed.
