The purpose of this course is to provide a fun-filled introduction to a lifetime of sailing.  Kids will sail with two or three of their peers and an instructor in a 14 foot dinghy and learn through demonstrations and practice.  The game-inspired curriculum covers learning the names of boat parts, finding wind direction, learning to steer with the tiller, and fundamental seamanship skills.  The class enables the kids to become familiar with water safety and dinghy sailing, and to feel comfortable around the yacht club and on the water.

SEA HORSES

Pre-requisite: 6-8 year olds should have completed Sea Urchins or equivalent. 9-10 year olds may take Sea Horses as a beginning class.

In Sea Horses students will begin to sail "solo" in sabots, while deepening their understanding of rigging, boat handling, seamanship and safety.  This is a big step, so sailors enjoy an outstanding student/coach ratio of 4:1. As always, the emphasis is on fun.  It is not uncommon to repeat Sea Horses during the same or over consecutive summers. The vast majority of Sea Horses take advantage of SDYC’s optional charter Sabots for this class.

Charter: Charter of a Club Sabot is required for those not sailing their own boat

ADVENTURE SAILING

Ages: 11 - 15

This class is all about having fun while spending time on the water and improving sailing skills. Adventure Sailing is designed for the pre-teen or young teenage sailor with little or no sailing experience, or those who would prefer to emphasize recreation rather than racing.

Sailors will cover all the basics while sailing doublehanded in Flying Junior dinghies. Topics and activities such as destination sails in the bay and ocean, navigation, and field trips to local sailing industries and attractions will keep participants engaged while promoting a broader knowledge of our sport.

HIGH SCHOOL TRAINING CAMP

High School Sailing is the fastest growing aspect of junior sailboat racing, and for good reason: it’s totally co-ed, social, and simple enough for new sailors to get involved. Our High School Training Camp will prepare sailors for the scholastic racing experience in Club Flying Junior dinghies.

Beginners and more experienced sailors will practice working as both skipper and crew, and will become familiar with popular high school practice drills such as "tack on the whistle" and "rabbit starts", while also getting a head start on the basics of divisional and team racing regatta formats.

Just like modern high school practices, stretching and conditioning will be a part of each day, and video analysis of practice on the water will be frequent. This class is absolutely ideal for the 7th or 8th grader getting ready for the upcoming school year, or older beginners looking to get involved with their high school sailing team.

NOVICE SABOT RACING

Pre-requisite: Completion of Sea Horses, or instructor promotion (Sailors should be able to rig, launch, sail on all points of sail, and return to the dock safely with little or no coaching)

This four week class is designed to prepare sailors for the Sabot Racing Fleets.  Students will be introduced to the Racing Rules of Sailing and basic racing techniques.  Instructors will teach skills including using the tiller extension, roll tacking, equipment care, changing sail controls, and sportsmanship.  Sailors will practice starting and sailing race courses.

SABOT RACING FLEETS

Pre-requisite: Completion of Novice Sabot Racing or Director approval

C3 Fleetsailing emphasizes participation rather than results. The class reviews how to sail upwind and how to get around a triangle course.  The curriculum covers intermediate racing tactics, The Racing Rules of Sailing, and race course management.  This class will be integrated with the Novice Racing Class.

C2 Fleet sailors continue to work on boat handling skills and the Racing Rules of Sailing.  Sailors will become more confident in strong wind and adverse conditions.

C1 Fleet sailors should be confident with boat handling and ready to practice more advanced racing techniques. Sailors will learn how to practice efficiently and use different sailing drills to improve boat speed and handling.

B Fleet sailing focuses on sail and boat trim.  Sailors are introduced to the physics of racing sailboats.  Sailors practice using sail controls, body weight and sail theory to make their boat go faster.

A Fleet sailors train to achieve top finishes at regattas including the Sabot National Championship.  The practices can be compared to advanced racing practice with many drills and specialized coaching. Sailors will be expected to ask many questions and learn how to evaluate their own performance.

Sabot Racing Fleet sailors are encouraged and expected to travel to regattas along the Southern California Coast. The Sabot Racing Schedule will be published and trailers will be available to be towed to all events.  Coaches will escort sailors to regattas and provide support on and off the race course.

ADVANCED RACING

Pre-requisite: Approval by Junior Director

Advanced racing students are usually sabot 'A' or 'B' fleet graduates and are active participants in regional regattas.  The goal of each advanced racing campaign is to train for and perform well in major competitions throughout the summer while sailing for SDYC.  Regattas will include but are not limited to Junior Olympics and CFJ Nationals.  Other campaigns may be established subject to demand and interest. Campaign activities will generally run on a full day schedule.

This module will prepare our team for the Junior Olympic Festival held here at San Diego Yacht Club, July 14-17. Sailors must sign up as a two person team and specify whether they will sail a CFJ, C420, or 29er (29er sailors must supply their own boat.) This class will take an aggressive approach to regatta preparation, running from 10am to 4:30pm, and sailing in the ocean on most days. Video analysis will be frequent.

This is the final two weeks of our standard four week Sabot Racing program, prorated to allow sailors who have been competing in doublehanded events to join us for the excellent coaching and robust practice size that have let to Team SDYC success so many times before.
