Welcome to SDYC’s new improved Afterschool Sailing program! We’ve kept all the best elements of our traditional program and then added a few major improvements which will allow more flexibility for all participants. At the same time, the new format will enable us to much more easily add specialized scenarios to meet the specific goals of our young sailors. Here are the key changes:

  • We will no longer break Afterschool Sailing into separate seasons. With just a few exceptions around holidays, Afterschool Sailing will occur between Labor Day and Memorial Day.
  • Instead of registering for separate seasons, participants may purchase “books” of 10 sessions which may be used at the sailor’s discretion. Obviously regular attendance will yield the best results for most sailors, but all will benefit from the flexibility afforded for vacations, bad weather, academic demands, etc.
  • Individual sessions may be purchased for single-day participants as well, but the best value is to purchase a book of ten.
  • We’ll still run our traditional weekly schedule of classes for Beginners, Racing Sabots, and Advanced Racers
  • This new format will allow us to easily add activities such as Girls’ Practice, Team Racing Practice, Campaigns for SCYYRA Series Events, and even Personal Coaching arrangements! Sailors may simply use their pre-purchased sessions to participate in these activities without a whole new registration and billing required. Voila, it’s that easy!
  • For those desiring to sail a Club owned Sabot, CFJ, or C420 for any particular session, charters will also be handled in the same pre-paid fashion.
  • Pre-purchased Sessions and Charters do not expire.

We are really excited about all the new opportunities this new format opens up, and hope you will be too. Please let us know if you have any questions at all, or have an idea for a unique practice or activity. Our goal is to see as many sailors on the water as possible and maximize fun, learning, and results for all!

All classes are from 3:30 pm until 6:00 pm
Classes begin September 7th

Prerequisite: Completion of the 2nd Grade

The goal of this class is to teach young children a basic knowledge of sailing. Students will solo in Sabots and work on basics such as learning terminology, finding wind direction, steering, tacking and gybing, capsizing and other fundamentals.  This course is appropriate for summer graduates of the Sea Urchins and Sea Horses classes, as well as true beginners.

All after school classes are "maintenance" oriented, meaning that topics will be repeated several times and lessons will be selected based on daily weather and group attendance.  Sailors are ready to advance to Thursday's racing class when they can functionally rig, launch, sail on all points of sail, and return to the dock safely without instructor aid.

Prerequisite: Participants in Racing Sabots are functional solo sailors.

The Sabot Racing class is designed to introduce and reinforce the fundamentals of competitive sailing: boat handling, boat speed, strategy and tactics.  Each afternoon will consist of a brief chalk talk, on the water drills, and short course racing. Large attendance and repetition have been the keys to our sailors' success over the years.  Participants are encouraged and expected to participate in regattas shown on the SDYC calendar.

High School Training Camp
Prerequisite: None

This is the perfect class for teenagers with little or no sailing experience hoping to join their High School team or for those simply looking for an extra day of practice each week.

Advanced Racing
Prerequisite: Junior Directors Approval

Advanced Racing is a flexible format class in which participants can develop their skills sailing CFJs, C420s, 29ers and Lasers.  Boat handling will be a major focus as well as spinnaker and trapezing technique.  The class goal will be gearing up our racers for the SDAYC Luff-in Series, SCYYRA racing series, CISA, and the Junior Olympics.
