BOAT NAME: Sunshine
BOAT TYPE: Hatteras 38C SKIPPER: Kim Drenser EXPERIENCE: 10 Years
BUILT: 1971 PURCHASED: 2001
FAVORITE DESTINATION:
Catalina - this is a great destination itself but also a great home base for fishing trips. Additionally, the island offers something for everyone. My daughter loves kayaking and swimming; my mother loves the beach and shopping! We have great family reunions at Catalina and everyone looks forward to the next trip.
FAVORITE BOATING EXPERIENCE: Our best trip was the second trip from Marina del Rey to Ensenada and back. We spent a week in Ensenada and multiple days stopping at various ports. The tuna were running and the weather was perfect. Whale watching was even good. The ride back up the coast was rough but uneventful and everyone had a great time.
ABOUT THE CREW: Kim (wife and 1st mate) is a physisican, Mark (husband and captain) is a civil/environmental engineer, Bill (Kim's Dad) is the fishing organizer, Pat (Kim's Mom) is the navigator, and Morgan (daughter of Kim and Mark) is the true boss (of everything).
WHAT'S IN A NAME: "SUNSHINE"
Sunshine was the name of the boat when we bought it - we liked the name (and are a little superstitious) so it stuck.
REASON FOR PURCHASING THIS BOAT:
We have always been partial to Bertram and Hatteras and love to fish as well. When we saw this boat at a boat show we knew it was right for us and made an offer that day. Since then we have spent most vacations on the boat and have great memories.
PREVIOUS BOATS OWNED:
We also own a 25' Bertram - like I said we are a little partial!
INTEREST IN THE FUBAR ODYSSEY:
We have always wanted to make this trip - and spend some time in the Sea of Cortez. FUBAR is the perfect forum for this adventure and has the added benefit of meeting some like-minded people.
BOATING STORY:
My (Kim) closest encounter with a whale when I was a teenager - my Dad, sister and I were fishing off the Newport point; just drift across some structure and repeat. As we were in gear and repositioning for another drift a giant "rock" suddenly appeared just feet from the bow! As the spray from the blow hole reached the deck we all sat open jawed - the fluke bigger than the beam of the boat (10 feet). As it passed under the boat I ran to the gunwhale and touched its back - amazing (but too close).
