FAVORITE DESTINATION:
Northern Channel Islands. From our home port in Ventura, they are in our backyard, which helps. But also we love the seclusion and the wild nature of the islands, and the variety of anchorages. Wildlife, beaches, hiking, kayaking, and just enjoying a fine evening on the hook. |
FAVORITE BOATING EXPERIENCE:
Oh, lots. One of the finest was certainly anchoring for a couple of days in Cuyler's at San Miguel Island, with our friends John and Kathy Youngblood (FUBAR 2007 participants.) We had magically good weather, plenty of exercise hiking across the island, and such great fun watching the juvenile elephant seals, on kayak and on foot. |
ABOUT THE CREW:
Stan and Val are both veterinarians. Val retired in 2008, and Stan, who has been working in the corporate world for many years, will retire this summer before the FUBAR. We live aboard our boat... but in answer to the common question, no, we don't have pets now. We were lucky enough to convince our sailing friends, Jeff and Julie Leonard, to come over to the dark side and join us for the FUBAR. He is a neurologist, and she is a nurse active in administration.

WHAT'S IN A NAME: "PAX NAUTICA "
Pax Nautica means 'peace at sea' in Latin. It expresses what cruising means to us. Of course, not every day aboard a boat is peaceful, as you all know! So let's just say, it captures what drew us to the cruising lifestyle. |
REASON FOR PURCHASING THIS BOAT:
We opted for a single-engine trawler for range and seaworthiness. After a couple of years researching and looking at trawlers, we settled on a new Selene. We found the Selene to be beautiful, and also sturdy and functional inside and out. We were able to get a lot of customization in the design, and all for a tremendous value. |
PREVIOUS BOATS OWNED:
Let's see now... counting backwards all those years... um, well, that would be none. |
INTEREST IN THE FUBAR ODYSSEY:
We will be cruising full-time internationally when we depart on the FUBAR. We love the idea of this rally of manageable size, as a way for us to get comfortable with the overnight passages we are not accustomed to, and as a way of easing into travel in Mexico. We plan to continue south, and eventually into Central America, after the winter holidays; we look forward to FUBAR presenting the possibility of meeting some kindred spirits with similar plans. So yeah... all those things, and also, the parties :-) |
BOATING STORY:
That would have to be the flying fish stories. Twice in the span of a few nights last summer, first anchored at Santa Barbara Island and then while moored in Howland's on Catalina. On each occasion, a fish invaded us belowdecks in the dead of night by flying headlong through a screened porthole and flopping around in the head sink or on the floor. Just happenstance they did not land in our bed! No, we did not eat them 'cause they stink something terrible. And yes, we have pictures! |
