CAREFREE II

View more profiles
BOAT NAME: Carefree II
BOAT TYPE:
Marshall LRC
SKIPPER: John Cone
EXPERIENCE: 33 Years
CLUB: Point Loma Yacht Club
BUILT:
1980
PURCHASED: 2000

FAVORITE DESTINATION:
Catalina--The Isthmus in July or August. Great weather, good food, and always something interesting happening on the fairway.

FAVORITE BOATING EXPERIENCE:
Successful cruising to new places in calm seas. We also like just hanging out on a hook, can, or in the slip, swapping lies with other boaters.

ABOUT THE CREW:
Owners John and Jan have been together 42 years this June, and have logged lots of time on the Carefree II since buying her in 2000. Before that we were sailors. Other than the traditional division between grease monkey and chef, tasks on the boat are pretty evenly shared. For sure we're 50-50 on the semi-annual varnishing work. Our two crew members, Key Stage and Jeff Mansfield are both very experienced power boaters. Key, a retired physician owns his own Lord Nelson Victory Tug, which he uses to ply the waters near his home in Camden, ME. Key is currently Squadron Education Officer of the Mid-Coast Sail and Power Squadron. Jeff, a maritime attorney with the Navy, had a previous life as a high speed passenger ferry captain in the New York City area. He also worked as a factory captain delivering yachts to purchasers up and down the East Coast. Jeff has his USCG Master 100 ton license and now lives in San Diego.

WHAT'S IN A NAME: "CAREFREE II"
The previous owner's first boat was named Carefree. It had been built for the photographer in the movie by that name, a 1939 black and white musical featuring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. So, the name carries through a long Hollywood tradition----true Southern California!

REASON FOR PURCHASING THIS BOAT:
The Marshall-built California LRCs have a well-deserved reputation for strength, durability, and roominess. The Carefree II had been very well-maintained when we bought her, and has been very reliable since.

PREVIOUS BOATS OWNED:
A small, outboard runabout and a Sunfish. Also a partnership of sorts in a Newport 27.

INTEREST IN THE FUBAR ODYSSEY:
The opportunity to go south with a group of experienced boaters in a well-organized, safe, and supervised way---and all the PARTYING on the way!

BOATING STORY:
Perhaps not so funny, but certainly memorable was the longest night of our boating lives one summer off Santa Cruz Island. We were on the hook at Smugglers' Cove where we rocked and rolled like we never have since.
