LEARN HOW TO TALK TO THE COAST GUARD SO THEY CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE

Have you ever been in distress on the water and needed the Coast Guard? Every day, someone finds themselves in a boating emergency and calls out on Channel 16, but, unfortunately, they may have no idea what to say or do.

Our guest speakers are Coast Guard petty officers who are “guarding” Channel 16 24/7, 365, and who are the people who jump into action when someone’s in trouble. They’ll walk us through the process to help us be more efficient and successful on the radio so they can help us, and they’ll have handouts we can keep aboard as references. We’ll all come away from the dinner knowing exactly what information we’ll need to pass on the radio in an emergency.

We’ll have three “watchstanders” from the Coast Guard plus Communications Chief Petty Officer Nathan Distelrath to educate us and answer our questions. One of the watchstanders is our own Cruising Fleet member, Larry Shushan, who qualified earlier this year to stand the watch at Coast Guard Sector San Diego. He’ll be joined by two others, both of whom helped train him and whose voices you may well recognize!
