PRESENTATION: After brief comments, a selection of Nautica will be available for viewing, including a Sir Robert Dudley sea chart from the mid‐17th century, a sextant owned & used by Capt George Vancouver, text and atlas volumes describing Cook’s 3rd voyage, 19th Century US Coast Survey Charts of San Diego Bay and more.

SPEAKER: Capt Richard Cloward is the Museum Director. A long‐time resident of San Diego (Will C. Crawford HS, 1960), he served 30 years in the US Navy, commanding ships, an Amphibious Squadron and, finally, the Naval Amphibious School at Coronado. After retiring, he headed the San Diego Port Tenants Association for several years. A map collector himself, he also owns Pacific Shore Maps. He holds degrees from the University of New Mexico and Georgetown University.

HISTORY: The Map & Atlas Museum of La Jolla was founded by La Jollan Michael Stone in 2011 to house his collection and to provide the opportunity for the public to view some of the world’s rarest cartography free of charge and with no obligation to donate. Over 200 items, ranging from the world’s only surviving medieval timekeeper to pictorial maps of San Diego done in the in the 1920’s. Available for tours and events, the museum has hosted numerous schools, senior citizen groups, travel clubs and visitors from around the world. The Museum also provide a superb venue for meetings, receptions, and scholarly presentations.
