Richard Spindler, So-Cal TaTa, Santa Barbara to Catalina

Richard will share his extensive cruising knowledge with a focus on ideas for people to extend a Catalina Cruise North to Santa Barbara.

In 1994 he founded the Baja Ha-Ha, which is the 750-mile cruisers' rally from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, with R&R stops at Turtle Bay and Bahia Santa Maria. He has run the event for the entire 25-year history, during which time over 3,000 boats and 10,000 sailors have participated.

He also founded the SoCal Ta-Ta, which is a week long version of the Baja Ha-Ha that takes the fleet from Santa Barbara to Catalina via Santa Cruz Island and several coastal stops.

Richard Spindler, who founded and was the ‘voice’ of the Latitude 38 sailing magazine for 40 years, has a long history of sailing in Mexico. Starting in 1981, he has raced to and cruised Mexico from the Sea of Cortez to Acapulco on a variety of his boats: a Freya 39, an Olson 30, an Ocean 71 ketch, another Olson 30, a Cal 25, and a Surfin' 63 catamaran.

Joining Spindler will be his wife, Dona de Mallorca-Spindler, whose sailing experience includes years of working on yachts in the Med, two Atlantic crossings, 22 Baja Ha-Ha's, and being the captain of Profligate on 19 Baja Bashes.

Over the years he has started a number of charity sailing events in Mexico, including Sea of Cortez Sailing Week, Zihua SailFest, the Banderas Bay Blast, the Pirates for Pupils Spinnaker Run, and others.

Spindler and de Mallorca-Spindler live on boats 12 months a year: On the 63-ft catamaran Profligate in Mexico from November to the end of January; on a Leopard 45 cat in St. Barth in the French West Indies from February to the end of April; on a 43-ft motoryacht in Paris from May to the end of July; and on the 63-ft cat in Southern California from August to the end of October.
