North U/SDYC Match Race Clinic & US Sailing Umpire Clinic

Thursday, January 23, 2020 -
Sunday, January 26, 2020
San Diego Bay

Match racing is an exciting way to play and officiate the game of sailboat racing, and a great way to have some fun in the sport while dramatically increasing your sailboat racing and judging skill and knowledge. Sailors who match race do better when they fleet race, whether driving or crewing; and umpiring dramatically improves your rules knowledge and speed of decision-making and understanding of the game.

The Match Racing Clinic will be coached by five-time National Match Racing Champion Dave Perry, author of the North U Match Racing Playbook, and frequent coach at San Diego YC match racing clinics. The clinic will cover the tactics and strategies needed to be competitive and successful in Match Racing, and will focus on the boat handling and boat speed aspects of racing a J/22 well.

The Umpire Seminar will be led by Kirk Brown and Dave Pyron. Kirk and Dave are National and International Umpires and certified umpire assessors. The seminar is a certification level seminar appropriate for new and experienced umpires. Classroom work and on-the-water umpire coaching will be provided.

TARGET SAILORS: The match racing clinic is for sailors who are interested in learning more about match racing in small keelboats, and in raising their sailing skill level. No match racing or keelboat sailing experience is needed or expected.

TARGET UMPIRES: New and experienced umpires.

BOATS: The boats used will be J/22’s.

ENTRY FEE: The match racing clinic fee is $400 per team of three or four sailors, and $30 per umpire. This includes the coaching, use of the boats, Dave’s 4th edition of the Match Racing Playbook and munchies/light dinners after sailing Friday.

Registration will be on a first come-first served basis until the clinic is filled. Sailors are encouraged to register as soon as possible.
